Renaissance and the Age of Exploration

When: 1500 - 1750
Where: Atlantic, Asia, Europe

This period is immediately identified by such events as the Reformation, the discovery of the 'New World" and the emergence of a new image of man and his world through movements in art, philosophy and the sciences. Ultimately, the era of the nation-state began, bringing with it the desire to build up political and economic power beyond the seas. The Americas, Africa and Asia provided regions of expansion for Europe's new powers. It marked the beginning of the end for once-great civilizations like the Mayans and Incans.

The Origin of Valentine's Day?

Valentines day dates back to Roman times, when a holiday called The Feast of Lubercus was celebrated to protect shepherds and their flocks from wolves. During this time of year, goddess Juno Februata was honored by pairing boys and girls and denoting them 'partners' for a year.

Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 497 AD, in an effort to replace pagan holidays with Christian tradition. Although the pairing ritual was banished, romance remains the distinctive attribute of this holiday.
